Viking Cruises on a collision course?
The rapidly expanding Viking River Cruises called on its personnel in the middle of January to accept future salary payments in Euros – at the December exchange rate of 1:1.21. And now, without the consent of the c. 2,000 employees, the company has gone ahead and transferred the January pay at the rate that it had unilaterally decided on. The current rate is 1:05. This sort of coercion has been accompanied by massive pressure on the nautical crews who are currently on board in the ships’ winter quarters. The majority of the boatmen have rejected the plans of the company, formed their own network and involved Nautilus International. 65 of them joined Nautilus by now!
One alleged «ringleader» has already been fired, and another one yesterday, others have been threatened with the same fate. All of this is hard to understand as the company is currently booming and the greater part of its income is in the form of US dollars and pounds sterling. At the same time the company of course wants to profit from Switzerland’s lower company tax and social security contributions – all paid in Swiss francs. We tried to get in touch with the company several times without success. Meanwhile the management tries to put more pressure on the staff to sign new contracts with conditions that are worse than before.
Nautilus International Switzerland provides legal advice to the crewmembers and information to the public. Great media response was gained. Nevertheless the company seems to be willing to continue their policy of confrontation.
This means no other choice to increase the pressure on Viking with every means possible in the very near future.
