Two crew members die when river cruise ship collides with bridge
During the night of the 11th of September a tragic accident occurred on Main-Donau-Kanal in Erlangen, Germany. Two Hungarian crew members (aged 33 and 49) died while navigating the Swiss flagged Viking River Cruises cruise ship Viking Freya when the wheelhouse was impacted by a rail bridge because it had not been retracted. All 180 passengers were successfully evacuated. more >>

ETF launches its second set of concrete proposals to tackle social dumping in road transport
This week the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) launched a set of concrete proposals for the revision of EU cabotage rules (Regulation (EC) No 1071/2009) and the rules on access to occupation (Regulation (EC) No 1072/2009). This comes in anticipation of the European Commission ‘road initiative’ planned for the 1st semester of 2017, which is expected to solve out critical market and social problems the sector has been confronted with in the past decade.  more >>

ETF joins 176 European and national civil society organisations and trade unions in supporting a joint statement called “a new Europe for people, planet and prosperity for all”. It aims to draw attention to the urgent need to reflect on fundamental questions: how do we ensure that the European project reclaims its promise of peace, democracy and solidarity and how can Europe work for its people? The common statement pleads for, among others, rejecting populist solutions, tackling challenges together and fighting for a sustainable, social Europe for people and for our planet. more >>

“IPR are not an obstacle for mobility”, declared business representative Dominique Kaesmacher at a conference in Brussels on 1 and 2 September organised by Eurocadres in cooperation with its Belgian affiliates. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders to discuss the role of unions in protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) of employees: inventors, researchers, lawyers, scientists, journalists, social partners, MEPs… Mila Nikolova attended the conference as ETF representative. more >>

EU-Qatar Deal must include aviation workers' rights
On the eve of the first negotiation round between the EU and Qatar on a horizontal air transport agreement taking place from 19 – 21 September 2016 in Doha, the ETF reiterates its demand that such type of agreements must contribute to a social progress for all aviation workers. Further liberalisation of air transport without proper safeguards can seriously damage the European aviation sector.  more >>

ETF presents concrete proposals for upcoming Road Initiative
On Tuesday 13 September the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) will outline, at a press conference in Strasbourg hosted by Dutch MEP Dennis de Jong, its views related to the enforcement and revision of the EU rules on cabotage and on access to occupation of road transport operator. The ETF will present tangible measures to eradicate letter-box companies, to clarify the definition of cabotage, to ensure that drivers’ rights are respected and to achieve enforcement of posting of workers and cabotage rules in the sector. more >>
