ETF organises European demonstration against social dumping in road transport

24 April 2017

More than a thousand bus, coach, truck drivers and their union representatives will gather at the Schuman roundabout on Wednesday 26 April, between 10:00 – 12:00, calling on the European Commission to close the gaps in the EU rules and make them more enforceable and much more effective in combating social dumping and unfair competition in road transport. Members of the European Parliament will address the demonstration in support of the European Transport Workers’ Federation’s demands.

Following the demonstration an ETF delegation will meet Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc and members of her cabinet to present ETF’s concerns and proposals in view of the upcoming Road Initiative.

This major action is prompted by concrete evidence that the European Commission’s Road Initiative – an expected package of legal proposals aimed at simplifying, clarifying and making EU rules more enforceable to tackle fraudulent practices in the sector – will actually seek the contrary. DG MOVE intends to launch on 31 May a bundle of measures meant to shorten weekly rest periods for drivers and extend their driving time This will deepen driver fatigue and put at stake the safety of bus and coach passengers and the safety of other road users.

The European Commission equally intends to deprive professional drivers from low-income countries of fair wage levels and working conditions, contrary to principles enshrined in the EU Treaty and rules, to the EC declared objectives and to the commitment of the EU Member States for a Europe without discrimination.

“Not our kind of Social Europe!” claim ETF members and professional drivers who currently work and live in conditions easily qualified as ‘modern slavery’!

The ETF European demonstration of 26 April will be one of the major actions of the ETF campaign for a Social Road Initiative launched on 30 March that fits in ETF’s fight to obtain Fair Transport in Europe across all sectors the workers’ organisation represents.
