Unions and employers in inland waterways make joint call for end to violence against women and LGBTQI workers

24 April 2018

Inland Waterways Social Partners Declaration against VAW*

The social partners for inland waterways (ETF, EBU and ESO) have issued a joint declaration, pledging to fight against the workplace violence faced by women and LGBTQI employees in the sector.  They also call on the EU Institutions and Member States to make the issue a priority, for example by supporting and implementing an ILO Convention on violence and harassment in the world of work.

A recent ETF survey found that 63% of women transport workers have experienced at least one recent act of violence, and that 26% consider that harassment is ‘part of the job’ in transport. Workers in the inland waterways sector can be particularly vulnerable to harassment and its psychological impact, because the boat is both their workplace and home – often for weeks at a time.

The social partners now plan joint actions to raise awareness about the workplace violence faced by women and LGBTQI workers in inland waterways. They will also work to ensure that women and LGTBQI workers are entitled to equal access to jobs and professions in the IWT sector well as to equal working and living conditions on board of the vessels.
