ETF stands with railway workers after fatal TGV accident

8 Apr 2026

The European Transport Workers’ Federation expresses its deep sadness following the tragic accident yesterday morning involving a TGV train and a truck carrying military equipment near Bully-les-Mines, between Lens and Béthune.

We mourn the loss of the train driver who lost his life in this devastating incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to their family, colleagues, and loved ones. We also wish a swift and full recovery to the injured passengers, including those in critical condition, as well as to the train conductors and all railway staff affected.

We stand in full solidarity with our national affiliates and all railway workers impacted by this tragedy.

While the causes of the accident are still under investigation, initial indications point to an incident involving an oversized load at a level crossing. This underscores longstanding concerns about insufficient investment in rail infrastructure. Years of underfunding and neglect in maintaining a safe rail system continue to expose both workers and passengers to unacceptable risks.

We reiterate the urgent need for state authorities to prioritise and significantly increase investment in rail infrastructure and safety.

On behalf of the ETF our Railway Workers’ Section Chair Gerhard Tauchner expressed deep regret for all those coping with loss or injury:

“On behalf of the railway workers who are part of the ETF family, I express my deep regret to all those who are coping with the loss or injury of their loved ones. Less than three months ago, I delivered the same message on the sad occasion of yet another tragic series of rail accidents, this time in Spain.

Policymakers must take action — it is absolutely essential to take the necessary steps to prevent such tragic incidents. The responsible authorities must evaluate and coordinate the required measures together with the national trade unions.”
