Deep-sea fishing ban threatens economic viability of EU longline fleet

Social Partners in the fisheries sector call on the European Commission to urgently fix the problems coming from the deep-sea fishing ban. Researchers estimate that applying the new EC Regulation can lead to up to a 27 million euros reduction in global turnover, with annual losses of up to 150,000 euros per year per vessel, which will cause irreversible and structural damage to the future of the EU longline fleet.

Thousands of fisheries’ jobs at risk due to the bottom-trawling ban

The European Commission’s intention to drastically reduce – even ban – bottom-contacting fishing gears is no secret. But the implications of such a decision are often disregarded. The ETF favours more sustainable fisheries, as fishers – the true guardians of the sea – are fully aware that the sustainability of fish stocks and the marine ecosystem is vital in preserving their income and jobs.

SOS call to preserve coastal fishing communities in the Mediterranean Sea

EU Social Partners – ETF, Europêche and Copa-Cogeca – adopted a joint resolution on the situation of fisheries in the Mediterranean. We call upon the European Commission to propose balanced measures to secure a future for fishermen, coastal communities and fishing resources in the Mediterranean Sea.
