Solidarity message following the attack on Charlie Hebdo

9 Jan 2015

On behalf of more than 3.5 million transport workers from 41 European countries and over 230 trade unions, the ETF expresses solidarity with all journalists in Europe and the world following the barbaric attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7 January.

Our first thoughts and deepest sympathy go to the families, friends and colleagues of the people who died or got injured in this brutal attempt to muzzle one of the strongest critical voices in French media.
Pursuing a climate in which people have the liberty to fearlessly express their opinions in a peaceful manner will continue to be one of the key principles of the trade union movement.

We therefore welcome the unity with which people around the world show their solidarity and determination not to allow a marginal group of extremists to undermine one of the core values of democracy, the freedom of speech, and spread fear and division in our societies.
