How do we make Europe’s fishing sector safer, fairer, and more attractive for the next generation? More than 70% of the seafood consumed in the EU is imported, while the European fishing sector is struggling to attract the next generation of workers. Pillars of the Sea 4 Through this project, the Social Partners aim to strengthen the social dimension of fisheries by focusing on occupational health and safety on board, monitoring the implementation of the United Nations specialized agency International Labour Organization “Work in Fishing” Convention (C188) and the corresponding EU Directive 2017/159, and conducting a qualitative assessment of the factors contributing to the sector’s low attractiveness for young workers and women.
