In the framework of the EU-funded project “Enhancing Recruitment and Training in the European Shipping Industry”, the ETF organised three workshops and a final conference in the course of 2009 and 2010. The objective of this project was to identify ways to attract young people to a seafaring career and to develop a more stimulating career path and mobility within the maritime cluster.

The first workshop dealt with how to address the deficit in the number of European seafarers and possible skills gaps. The second workshop discussed how to enhance the image of the maritime sector and promote quality working and living conditions at sea. The third workshop focused on how to ensure a better career path and long-term prospects in the maritime cluster. A final conference in Genoa, on 18 November 2010, drew conclusions and paved the way for a follow up in the framework of the European Sectoral Social Dialogue.

The ETF project ended with the publication of a final report. It served as a basis for adopting a related ETF policy on training and recruitment in the maritime industry.
