Greek seafarers call strike against 3rd round of austerity measures

22 Oct 2015

On 21 October 2015, the Greek ETF affiliate PNO (Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation) announced a strike against the third set of austerity measures imposed to the Greek people. On Monday 2 November a 48 hours strike of Greek seafarers will commence at 6 am and the union will also join the 24 hours general strike on 12 November called by the Greek Trade Union Confederation.

PNO protests against the so-called third Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), austerity measures imposed on the Greek government as a condition for receiving financial assistance, a third loan from the European Institutions, to help the country out of the difficult financial situation it has been put at. Those MoU measures would lead to, among others, the dissolution of pension funds and the continuing downgrading of medical protection for workers and retirees.

The ETF supports PNO’s announced strike actions against the never-ending decline of social acquis in Greece and the welfare state as a whole and calls on its affiliates to express solidarity with the Greek seafarers and working class.
