ETF survey on driver fatigue in European road transport

5 May 2020

In the framework of the EU-funded project “Trade unions and drivers for safer roads in Europe”, the ETF is launching an online survey on driver fatigue in European road transport. The project’s objective is to build capacity among the ETF member organisations to address driver fatigue in passenger and freight road transport. The ETF – in cooperation with the research institute wmp consult – will develop a study on driver fatigue in bus, coach and road freight transport. Further information about the project is available on the dedicated project webpage and the project flyer (see on the right-hand side under Downloads).

ETF’s online survey on driver fatigue in European road transport aims to improve awareness about driver fatigue among European bus, coach and truck drivers, to identify and address causes and impacts of drivers’ fatigue and preventive measures against it.

The target group of the online survey are truck, coach and bus drivers, who travel long distances or work long working hours (e.g. more than 8 hours a day). However, the survey does not cover urban public transport.

The findings of the survey will be used by the ETF and wmp consult to gain more knowledge about driver fatigue in European road transport and will feed into the study. The survey does not ask respondents to disclose their name and all the information provided will be treated as strictly confidential.

Background

Driver fatigue is not “part of the job”. On the contrary, it consists of mental and physical fatigue as well as drowsiness. Signs of driver fatigue can be yawning, difficulty keeping the eyes open and difficulty concentrating. Driver fatigue leads to an increased tendency to mentally withdraw from driving tasks and deterioration in driving performance manifesting itself in slower reaction time, reduced attention, a higher rate of lane crossings and the overall ability to maintain control over the vehicle.
