ETF Expresses Solidarity with Communities Affected by Central and Eastern Europe Floods
The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) has issued a message of solidarity to its affiliates and the broader community in Central and Eastern Europe following the devastating floods caused by Storm Boris. This extreme weather event has had a severe impact across Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Italy and Romania, with extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and transport systems.
In a letter addressed to unions in the affected countries, ETF General Secretary Livia Spera expressed the Federation’s deep concern for the safety and well-being of all workers and their families. She commended the heroic efforts of transport workers who have been central to the emergency response, working to restore vital connections and deliver essential supplies to those in need.
“The ETF stands ready to mobilise resources and support from across Europe,” Spera said, reinforcing the importance of solidarity during times of crisis. The ETF will continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance as needed to help the affected communities recover from this disaster.
ETF Railways Steering Committee Offers Support for Devastated Rail Networks
Alongside the general message from the ETF, the ETF Railways Steering Committee has also issued a special statement addressing the floods’ impact on railway infrastructure in the region. Rail services, a crucial lifeline for the movement of people and goods, have suffered extensive damage, further complicating recovery efforts.
The Railways Steering Committee acknowledged the significant challenges transport networks face and applauded the tireless work of railway employees who continue to repair and restore critical infrastructure. “Their commitment is vital not only to the recovery of the affected areas but also to the safety and well-being of millions of people,” the committee said.
Both the ETF and its Railways Steering Committee reaffirm their solidarity with the affected communities and workers, and they stand ready to provide support in whatever way they can to ensure a swift and resilient recovery.
