Belgium and Ivory Coast ratify ILO “Work in fishing” Convention

News

The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) welcomes the ratification of the ILO Convention No. 188 on “Work in Fishing” by Belgium and Côte d’Ivoire. Each new ratification strengthens the Convention’s role as a global benchmark for ensuring decent working conditions in the fishing sector.

Belgium’s ratification is a positive step, bringing it in line with other EU Member States that have already committed to this fundamental labour standard. Equally important is the ratification by Côte d’Ivoire, a key labour-supplying country in the fisheries sector: this move signals a strong commitment to upholding the rights and protections of fishers.

The Convention will enter into force on 11 June 2026 in Belgium and on 8 June 2026 in Côte d’Ivoire.

The EC Fair Labour Mobility Package, a step in the right direction

The ETF welcomes the Fair Labour Mobility Package presented yesterday by the European Commission. Mobile and non-EU workers are essential to the fabric of the internal market and the possibility to work in another EU country is an invaluable freedom. However, labour mobility only works in a spirit of fairness and upwards social convergence.
