Long Distance Advisory Council, ETF and Europeche have taken a new step in their cooperation in strengthening labour protection of fishers today. They addressed a joint letter to the European Commission, requesting the transposition of key international legal instruments on safety and labour standards in the fishing sector.
Adoption of international fisheries standards that promote safety and good working conditions for fishers, training, and responsible fishing operations is particularly key considering that work in fisheries is widely recognised as among the most hazardous.
The signatories of the letter map out the different instruments that still need to be ratified by all Member States, such as:
- IMO Torremolinos Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels
- IMO Cape Town Agreement
- IMO Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel, 1995 (STCW-F 95)
- ILO Work in Fishing Convention (ILO C188)
They also encourage DG MARE to work with EU Member States in developing further the social dimension of the Common fisheries policy.
