Over 10,000 London Underground staff are on strike this week to demand better pay and safer conditions. In a separate dispute, workers operating the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and outsourced cleaners on the DLR are also on strike.
The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) stands in solidarity with the essential transport workers that keep London moving and their union, ETF affiliate RMT.
Tube workers ensure that millions of Londoners and tourists are able to get to work, school or leisure, but have increasingly had to deal with extreme shift patterns and fatigue on the job. Without serious action from management to reduce working time and tackle fatigue, workers’ wellbeing and passenger safety will continue to be at risk.
Londoners deserve securely and reliable public transport. However, this is impossible without the transport workers working around the clock to keep the Underground network functioning safely. ETF urges Transport for London to listen to its essential workers and their union and properly address their demands.
