Fishers’ jobs and income at risk due to sharp fuel prices increase

News

Together with other key stakeholders in the fishery industry – the Association of National Organizations of Fishing Enterprises in the EU (EUROPÊCHE), the European Agri-Cooperatives (Cocega) and the European Association of Fish Producers Organisations (EAPO) – the ETF asks the European Commission to adopt emergency measures to alleviate the increased fuel prices’ pressure on the sector. We believe such actions could easily lead to jobs and income losses since some vessels are already docked in the ports.

The conflict in Ukraine has led quickly to many consequences in Europe, primarily the sharp increase of energy costs. The fuel price reached an all-time high and aggravated the sector’s economic situation, facing difficulties even before the international situation escalated.

In the letter we addressed to the EU Commissioner for the environment, oceans and fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, we presented our main concerns regarding the significant impact of increased fuel prices on the fisheries sector.

We believe all possible efforts should be made to allow fisheries operations to carry on and continue providing healthy food to the European citizens.

According to EU-OSHA 2025 numbers, one in five workers in the EU signaled exposure to extreme heat at work in the previous 12 months, a figure rising to one in three in some countries.

A week earlier, headlines were dominated by reports of a flight from Dublin to Ibiza descending into what was described as "sex and booze chaos," leaving fellow passengers shocked.

UK public transport unions sound the alarm over lack of toilet access for drivers

Public transport unions in the United Kingdom are raising urgent concerns about the lack of access to toilet facilities for bus and train drivers, a problem that has persisted for years but is now reaching a breaking point. Reports from across the UK show drivers being forced to work entire shifts without guaranteed access to a toilet, leaving them to rely on improvised or unsafe alternatives, including urinating in bottles in their driving cab. Some unions are now considering industrial action to force employers and authorities to act.
