Today, the ETF sent a letter to Commissioner Kadis on the functioning of Advisory Councils, expressing our concern with recent proposals that seek a fundamental reform of the Advisory Councils’ (AC) structure, risking to undermine ACs and the essential role played by the fishing sector.
Advisory Councils, established to bring stakeholders such as fishers, NGOs, and industry representatives into EU decision-making, have long played a critical role in ensuring participatory governance. However, MEPs stress that structural and financial shortcomings are undermining their effectiveness. Key issues highlighted include insufficient funding, bureaucratic burdens, and the need for greater transparency and inclusivity.
Our letter calls on the Commission to streamline administrative procedures, provide adequate resources, and ensure balanced stakeholder representation.
By reinforcing the role of Advisory Councils, the EU can enhance sustainability, improve compliance with fisheries rules, and build a more resilient future for Europe’s fishing communities.
