Faced with the major challenge of reducing emissions from transportation, transport and manufacturing workers have built a solid platform to develop joint Just Transition strategies for 20 million workers in the mobility ecosystem. Their first joint project concludes today.

ETF in solidarity with Italian Unions after 5-death tragedy in Italy’s railway. A serious rail accident occurred last night on the railway line between Brandizzo and Chivasso, Italy. Five railway infrastructure maintenance workers died, and 3 other workers were injured.

This “ETF Climate Change Toolkit for Transport Trade Unions” aims to raise awareness among ETF affiliates of climate change as a core trade union issue. Transport trade unions cannot wait but must act proactively in the interest of their members to ensure just transition.

On Earth Overshoot Day, ETF releases its vision for Sustainable Transport. In our position paper, we present transport workers' and transport trade unions' demands for building a sustainable transport sector.

Over 130 truck drivers, who come from countries including Georgia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, and Tajikistan, are gathered at the rest area in Grafenhausen, Germany to demand pay owed them by the Polish trucking consortium Mazur Group or Agmaz-Lukmas-Imperia. It is the second wildcat strike by truck drivers in Germany and has brought renewed attention to the urgent need for intervention by government and industry stakeholders to protect the rights of third-country nationals.

ETF and ITF welcome the bilateral France - UK agreement over voluntary seafarer employment and welfare standards. Yet, they call together for the adoption of mandatory seafarer employment standards on European shipping routes, underpinned by sectoral collective bargaining rights.

With upcoming environmental legislation and new powertrain technologies, European road transport is at a crossroads. As jobs and working conditions continue to be impacted by new green transition-related regulations, road transport workers call for a Just Transition. As part of a joint EU-funded project, ETF and IndustriAll Europe organised a workshop dedicated to road transport sector.

The ETF welcomes the recent report published by Greenpeace, revealing the urgent need for better working conditions and employment standards in the aviation industry. There is no aviation industry without its workers, and they should become the 1st priority within the entire sector.

ETF and IndustriAll Europe joint JT4 Mobility workshop in Cologne discussed EU rail transport policies and rail development in Europe. Both organisations share concerns about constraints to achieve a Just Transition and the means currently available for rail workers, including the absence of a level playing field with other transport modes and insufficient investment.

The ETF stands in solidarity with our Italian affiliates and rail workers' unions. We pledge our unwavering support to the workers of Trenitalia and Italo as they strive for fair working conditions and the protection of their rights.

The advances that could come from the Greening Transport Package, presented by the European Commission, are shadowed by a striking incoherence that the ETF must point out. The facilitation of cross-border operations of “gigaliners”, the 44-tonne longer and heavier vehicles with European Modular Systems running on fossil fuels, will be an obstacle to reach a clean and just transition to a carbon-neutral freight industry.

Aviation trade unions representing manufacturing and transport workers discussed about realities of the green and digital transitions for the workforce during an aviation workshop, as part of the joint ETT-IndustriAll JT4MOBILITY project. Participants in the workshop taking place in Charleroi - an important European hub for aviation - tried to identify possible recommendations and tools to ensure that the transitions are socially responsible.
