Transport Workers

With upcoming environmental legislation and new powertrain technologies, European road transport is at a crossroads. As jobs and working conditions continue to be impacted by new green transition-related regulations, road transport workers call for a Just Transition. As part of a joint EU-funded project, ETF and IndustriAll Europe organised a workshop dedicated to road transport sector.

ETF President Frank Moreels is convinced the way forward for transport is to place people - both workers and users - at its core. Right after the ETF roundtable on the future of transport, he shared his views on how the transport sector should look like and what needs to be done to get there.

On 31 January and 1 February, industriAll Europe and the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) hosted the first set of workshops within the joint EU-funded project on Building a Just Transition towards a Smart and Sustainable Mobility. The goal was to understand better the trends, impacts and challenges of the twin transition and propose strategies to guarantee a fair and just transition for all workers.

Last week, ETF launched a worker-centred discussion around the future of transport with EU Transport Commissioner, Adina Vălean, and the European Parliament’s TRAN Committee coordinators - Marin-Jean Marinescu (EPP), Petar Vitanov (S&D), Ciarán Cuffe (Greens/EFA) and Elena Kountoura (The Left).

Organising our 6th Congress in Budapest is our way to thank our unions in Eastern and Central Europe, and a very big act of support to these courageous men and women trying to be independent trade unions.

The ETF Executive Committee has adopted a resolution reiterating ETF's strong call for peace in Ukraine. We are of the opinion that trade unions must send a strong and united condemnation not just for the war in Ukraine but for any other conflict.

The Steering Committee of the ETF Railway Section condemns the war in Ukraine as we condemn all wars worldwide.

The first ETF humanitarian aid transport is on its way to Ukraine. The convoy left Brussels this afternoon, and it is expected to reach the Slovak-Ukrainian border tomorrow, with immediate help destined to our transport workers in need in Ukraine.

During war, transport workers find themselves on the front line. Transport is crucial for access to food, medicine, and goods as well as work and leisure, and society’s reliance on transport and
