Ahead of Labour Day, the ETF addresses an open letter to European and national policy makers to remind them about the reality of transport workers and urge them to take action for fair transport:

The Transport (TRAN) Committee of the European Parliament adopted on 20 April its opinion on ‘fair working conditions, rights and social protection for platform workers’. Although it includes several constructive demands, it fails to condemn bogus self-employment and third employment status explicitly.

The ETF calls on MEPs to reject the European Commission’s greenwashing narrative surrounding the proposed Single European Sky reform. The proposal simplifies and oversells the potential positive effects for the environment while deliberately ignoring the reform’s adverse social impacts.

With the slogan “Transport for EU Recovery”, ETF, together with 31 organisations has issued a Statement on the Recovery and Resilience Facility to jointly call on Member States and the European Commission to ensure that the transport sector receives adequate consideration in the National Recovery and Resilience Plans.

The ETF calls for a European Year of Railway Workers. A year that not only focusses on how rail can best achieve to contribute to Europe’s climate neutrality but also on improving the working conditions for railway workers without which the industry would cease to function.

On the heels of yesterday's report on How to Make Transport Fit for Women to Work in which revealed an alarming gender divide in the transport industry, comes a joint call by ETF and MEP Vera Tax call on Commissioner Vălean and Commissioner Dalli to mainstream a gender-responsive approach into EU transport policies. A debate on Women in Transport in the framework of the first European Gender Equality Week at the European Parliament, will take place today and tackle the underlying issues that lead to an underrepresentation of women in the transport sector.

ETF Railway Section Chair Giorgio Tuti and ETF Deputy General Secretary and Political Secretary for Rail, Sabine Trier joined the Transport Working group of the S&D Group in the European Parliament to give an overview of the social situation in the rail sector.
